Bormio

Although the town of Bormio in Valtellina may be better known for its winter sports, there is plenty to do in the summer too.  You can easily spend time walking up the central Via Roma admiring the shops and buying local produce such as dried mushrooms, bresaola (air dried beef), scimudin cheese, Valtellina red wine or Braulio (a digestive drink).  Bormio also has its own thermal baths in the town and just a few kilometres outside at Bagni Vecchi you can enjoy a natural sauna and a plunge into an outdoor naturally heated pool.   For those of you who want to be more energetic you have a great choice; you can play golf, go walking in the Val Zebrù, part of the National Park, take a trip up to Lake Cancano or try your hand at summer skiing on the Stelvio Pass – a glacier at 3000 metres – where you may find the Italian national ski team busy training for the winter.  Bormio can also offer several bars, restaurants, pubs and a couple of discos/piano bars  where you can spend the evenings. Be sure you try the local Valtellina dish called pizzoccheri – a type of pasta served with potatoes, cabbage, cheese and butter all cooked in the oven
